2008 Southern Soccer Showcase presented by Wilco Hess Boys Weekend
Due to the 4+ inches of rain received between 4/3 and 4/5,
the Boys Weekend of the Southern Soccer Showcase was
cancelled. While we were all disappointed that the
outdoor games for the weekend were cancelled (including all
of the college matches), 20 of the
participating teams remained in Winston Salem for a full day
of indoor soccer at the Winston Salem Indoor Soccerplex.
Some members of the National Champion Wake Forest Men's
Soccer team stopped by to visit with the youth players and
share a highlight video.
72 matches were held over a 12 hour period and while it
couldn't match playing outdoors, the boys seemed to leave
both happy and tired.
The Boy’s weekend would
have included friendly matches with National Champion Wake
Forest playing ACC Rival UNC and National
Semi-finalist Virginia Tech playing Campbell University, and despite
being rained out received a
Silver rating from Got Soccer based on a tournament
field featuring 3 reigning state cup champions and teams
representing 10 states. The weather was much better for the Girls Weekend and 37 club teams plus 6 college teams gathered at BB&T Soccer Park for a great weekend of soccer. Youth players and their coaches and families were able to enjoy the ACC Women's Spring Soccer tournament featuring Wake Forest, UNC, Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech and Clemson. The girls weekend received a Gold Rating from Got Soccer because of an excellent tournament field that included 4 reigning state cup champions and teams representing 10 states.
